When is Eid al-Adha 2027?
By the Umm al-Qura calendar, Eid al-Adha 1448 is expected on Sunday, 16 May 2027, the day after the Day of Arafah on Saturday, 15 May 2027. Your local date may differ by a day depending on the moon sighting.
Sunnahs of the day
- Keep saying the takbir from the night of Eid until the imam begins the prayer.
- Bathe, wear your best clothes and, for men, perfume.
- Do not eat before the prayer. The Prophet ﷺ did not eat on the day of Adha until he had prayed (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 542, graded hasan), and many scholars say to eat first from your sacrifice.
- Go out to the prayer, with your family, including children and women.
- Return by a different route. The Prophet ﷺ went to the Eid prayer one way and came back another (Sahih al-Bukhari 986).
- Congratulate each other. The Companions greeted each other on Eid with taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum, “May Allah accept from us and from you.”
- Do not fast. The Prophet ﷺ forbade fasting on the two Eids (Sahih al-Bukhari 1990).
The Eid prayer
The Eid prayer is two rakʿahs, prayed after sunrise once the sun has risen a little, with no adhan or iqamah. In the first rakʿah there are extra takbirs before the recitation, and in the second more takbirs after standing up; the number differs between the schools of law, so follow your imam. The sermon comes after the prayer.
The sacrifice (udhiyah or qurbani)
- Who: it is a confirmed sunnah, and the Hanafi school holds it obligatory, for every adult Muslim who can afford it.
- When: after the Eid prayer on the 10th. The Shafiʿi school, and scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah, allow it until sunset on the 13th; the Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools until sunset on the 12th. A sacrifice made before the Eid prayer is ordinary meat, not an udhiyah.
- Which animal: a sheep or goat for one person and their household, or a seventh share of a cow or camel. It must be of the minimum age and free of clear defects.
- The meat: eat some, give some as gifts and give some to the poor. Dividing it in thirds is a common practice.
- Hair and nails: the person offering it should not cut them from the start of Dhul Hijjah until the animal is sacrificed. See the details.
The days of Tashriq
The 11th, 12th and 13th of Dhul Hijjah are the days of Tashriq. The pilgrims spend them in Mina, stoning the three pillars.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The days of Tashriq are days of eating and drinking.”
Fasting is not allowed on these days, except for a pilgrim who could not find a sacrificial animal. The takbir continues until ʿAsr on the 13th, and it is a time to enjoy what Allah has made lawful while remembering Him.
