Why the date can change

The Islamic calendar is lunar: each month starts when the new crescent moon is sighted, so a month has 29 or 30 days. The dates above come from the Umm al-Qura calendar, which is calculated in advance. For Dhul Hijjah, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia announces the start of the month after the moon is sighted, on the evening of the 29th of Dhul Qaʿdah, and that announcement sets the actual days of Hajj.

The calculated date and the announced date are usually the same, but they can differ by a day. Check the announcement at the start of Dhul Hijjah, or ask your local mosque.

What if my country starts Dhul Hijjah on a different day?

Some countries follow their own moon sighting and start the month a day after Saudi Arabia, so their Eid is a day later. Scholars differ on which day people in those countries should fast for Arafah: the 9th by their local calendar, or the day the pilgrims stand at Arafat. Both are recognised views. See which date to fast.

When does the day start and end?

In Islamic reckoning a day starts at sunset, so the Day of Arafah begins at Maghrib on the evening before (14 May 2027 in 2027) and ends at Maghrib on the day itself. The fast runs from dawn (Fajr) to sunset in your own location. The pilgrims' standing runs from midday until sunset at Arafat, and can continue until dawn for those who arrive late.
